Fables of Faeries, Friendship, and Frights (Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures)

Every home needs its heroes…

Your small village seems like a haven to you and your friends, but it is not safe.

Dangerous faeries lurk in the forest just outside of town, wicked men and ferocious monsters are a constant threat, and sometimes evil forces find their way into your neighbors’ hearts. You and your companions are young and untested, but ready to protect what matters.

Inspired by the works of Ursula K. LeGuin, Susan Cooper, and Lloyd Alexander, Beyond the Wall (Flatland Games) is a game of folk rural fantasy. The characters are coming of age in a village nestled near a medieval manor. We will be using playbooks that include the Witch’s Apprentice, the Goblin’s Child, the Adventurous Trader and others. The game has streamlined mechanics that are easily learned, so no prior experience is necessary.

Each session will be three hours, with much of our first session devoted to creating characters, relationships, and the village map. Attendance at all sessions is encouraged, but not required. You must RSVP to each session you wish to attend. Rules will be taught. Sessions will be recorded.

We will have a pregame discussion of lines and veils as well as employ the X-card during sessions. We will observe the Gauntlet Code of Conduct.

Content Warnings: We are aiming for a PG-13 rating. Most characters will be teenagers beginning to find their way in a world filled with mystery, magic, and hidden threats. While there will be moments of charm, bonding, and levity, the game will also introduce situations where children might be endangered, bullied, abandoned, harmed, or kidnapped.

Beyond the Wall: A Young Woodsman, the Lord’s Secret, the Witch’s Prentice, and the Heir to a Legend discover a number of strange events leading them to investigate the site of meteorite that has fallen from the sky. They don’t seem to be listening to a strange scholar who has just returned from the northern woods and who is warning them of terrors that are best left alone.
